Tasmanian Voices: the writers who make us
Tasmanian Voices: the writers who make us is a State Library and Archives of Tasmania program recognising Nipaluna/Hobart’s status as a UNESCO City of Literature.
In 2025 a panel of notable writers selected 21 significant literary figures from our past who have influenced the development of ideas within and about Lutruwita/Tasmania.
The panel adopted the broadest interpretation of ‘writer’ so that the list includes novelists, journalists, historians, poets, storytellers, publishers, playwrights and film producers.
Tasmanian Voices does not aim to be comprehensive. Rather, it is designed to ignite knowledge, curiosity and discussion about Tasmanian writers, literature and stories.
From 2026, Tasmanians will be invited to nominate additional writers.
The State Library and Archives of Tasmania will be holding regular Tasmanian Voices events, which will further explore Tasmanian literature and history.
Thank you to the panel members Matthew Lamb, Dr. Greg Lehman, Jane Rawson, Henry Reynolds and Danielle Wood.
Tasmanian Voices sits alongside the Writers’ Rooms at the State Library and Archives of Tasmania.
