George Lowther Broadside
This 1844 broadside records an act of Royal Clemency granted to a repentant criminal. George Lowther had been sentenced to death for murdering a gamekeeper while poaching on the Marquis of Normanby’s estate. However, his sentence was commuted to transportation. Along with 250 other convicts, he was sent to Tasmania aboard the Hyderabad, arriving on February 19, 1845. His convict records can be accessed through the Libraries Tasmania Names Index. Lowther passed away at Green Valley, Bagdad, on September 26, 1850.
