The Adult Literacy Service provides one-to-one literacy tutoring for adults who want to improve their everyday reading, writing and numeracy skills. Tutoring focuses on text-based literacy and numeracy skills. People learning to read and write English can ask for tutoring help.
English Conversation Groups
We also run free English Conversation Groups in many libraries across the state. Conversation groups focus on speaking and listening skills. The groups are friendly and welcoming. They offer people a safe place to connect and practise speaking and listening to English. People who want to build confidence with everyday interactions can attend conversation groups.
Community volunteers are at the heart of the program. Groups are welcoming spaces where participants feel comfortable to practice conversation, learn about the local community and share their experiences. Volunteers are often curious about different cultures and gain insight into different cultures and perspectives. Groups play a role in strengthening community inclusion.
English Conversation Groups run regularly in the following locations:
- Burnie Library
- Devonport Library
- Glenorchy Library
- Hobart Library
- Kingston Library
- Launceston Library
- Rosny Library
Depending on library capacity, groups may be offered in regional and community settings in response to community need. Adult Literacy Service staff coordinate English Conversation Groups and provide support to volunteers.
For more information about volunteering, attending or establishing a group in your area please contact your local library.
