5.6 Unacceptable behaviour at off-site activities

Staff and volunteers occasionally conduct Libraries Tasmania activities off-site, such as hosting Rock and Rhyme at a Child and Family Learning Centre, delivering a Know your device session at a Neighbourhood House, or providing loan items to home library service clients.

Staff will consider the following when managing unacceptable behaviour that occurs off-site.

  • Prioritise personal safety and the safety of others, including vulnerable individuals, such as children.
  • Alert the site supervisor (if at a community venue) to manage the unacceptable behaviour.
  • Use respectful communication to de-escalate a situation if there is no site supervisor to do this.
  • If safe to do so, ask the person to leave.
  • Call Tasmania Police if an individual is threatening harm to themselves or others or threatens to damage property or if they refuse to leave when asked.
  • Remove oneself from the situation.
  • Seek support from their manager when returning to the usual place of work.

Discuss with their manager whether the behaviour needs to be reported through formal channels.
