5.1 Guiding principles
The following guiding principles underpin Libraries Tasmania’s approach to responding to unacceptable behaviour outlined in this Policy.
Note: These principles do not apply in emergency situations.
Principle | What this means for Libraries Tasmania |
Prevent issues | We set clear conduct and behavioural expectations, have clear policies and procedures in place and provide staff training to create welcoming, safe and inclusive environments. |
Prioritise safety | We prioritise staff safety and the safety of other visitors, encourage staff to seek support from their colleagues or manager, activate duress alarm (if needed), seek help from Tasmania Police or other emergency services. |
Be professional | In responding to unacceptable behaviour, our staff approach individuals calmly and respectfully (if it’s safe to do so), use non-confrontational language, do not get physically involved and use de-escalation skills. |
Mitigate risks | We regularly assess potential risks to safety and conduct within our library environment, including identifying behaviours or situations that may lead to disruptions, conflicts, or harm to individuals. |
Respond | Our staff apply risk mitigation strategies and follow organisational procedures on managing unacceptable behaviour. |
Report | Staff report unacceptable behaviour including mandatory reporting and other incident reporting processes. |
Support | Staff are encouraged to seek support, practice self-care and access employee support services (if needed) following any incidents. |
