4. Legal framework
This Policy and Procedure is guided by the Libraries Regulations 2022 (Tas) and Archives Regulations 2014 (Tas).
The Libraries Regulations 2022 (Tas) (the Regulations) outline offences for inappropriate behaviour on library premises, with prescribed financial penalties. However, these financial penalties are seldom enforced. Instead, exclusions, bans and suspension of library privileges are typically applied as consequences for unacceptable behaviour and conduct.
The list of offences in the Regulations is not exhaustive. As all situations are different, staff must exercise judgement in what actions constitute unacceptable behaviour depending on the context. Each situation should be considered on a case-by-case basis and in accordance with this Policy and Procedure.
The Archives Regulations 2014 (Tas) prescribes additional rules around viewing and handling original records and heritage materials.
