Every Libraries Tasmania location has a reference collection. This collection is always on shelf to provide immediate information for library visitors.
Each library’s reference collection will vary according to the needs of the local community and may include:
- Tasmanian, local studies and family history material
- dictionaries and encyclopedias
- newspapers and magazines
- maps, directories and atlases
- government publications
- handbooks and almanacs
- pamphlets and oversized items
- microfilm and microfiche.
We also offer a selection of online reference resources.
State Library of Tasmania Reference Collection
Our pre-eminent Reference Collection can be found in the Reading Room on the 2nd floor of 91 Murray Street, Hobart. The Reading Room is the entry point to the State Library’s Reference and Tasmanian Heritage Collections and provides access to more than 300,000 items held on site. In addition to reference works covering local, national and international subject areas, the State Library’s Reference Collection strengths include:
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
- Antarctica
- family history
- motor vehicle service manuals
- Tasmania
- travel guides and maps.
Accessing the Reference Collections
You can access most of our book and serial publications within 30 minutes when you visit the Reading Room in Hobart. Make a request in advance to view an item.
Books from the State Library’s Reference Collection can be requested for use in any of our libraries. Contact your local library for more information.
