Throughout National Family History Month this August, Libraries Tasmania is helping Tasmanians on their journey into family history with a diverse program of free public talks, workshops and behind-the-scenes tours.
Activities will be held at the State Library and Archives of Tasmania, as well as public libraries across the state, offering something for everyone – from curious beginners to seasoned family history researchers.
Participants can explore their ancestry, learn new research techniques, and connect with others who share a passion for uncovering the past.
Public libraries:
- Join free workshops and learn how to navigate the Names Index and other online research tools with family history experts.
- Bring your family story to life and get practical tips to turn your family history into a published book at Kinimathatakinta/George Town Library.
State Library and Archives of Tasmania:
- Step into the past with a guided tour of the State Library and Archives of Tasmania at Launceston Library and discover how to unlock a treasure trove of family history resources.
- Go behind the scenes at the Tasmanian Archives in Geilston Bay and uncover the hidden gems that bring personal and community stories to life.
- Celebrate legacy and culture as the family of Tasmanian Aboriginal elder, Aunty Ida West shares powerful reflections on her enduring impact and contributions to the Aboriginal and wider Tasmanian community.
- Follow a journey across continents with Creative Writing Fellow Ivy Alvarez, as she traces the footsteps of Filipino anthropologist Eric Casiño in Tasmania – in person or via online webinar.
