Friends of the Library, Launceston Inc. is a community group that supports and promotes services at Launceston Library and its catchment libraries. The group was established in 1992 and its current patron is the Mayor of Launceston, Matthew Garwood.
Activities
- Book Sale: The annual Book Sale in March is the group’s main fundraiser, with thousands of items donated by members of the community sold at bargain prices.
- Live at the Library: This regular program of free musical performances at Launceston Library is held on the first and third Saturdays of the month.
- Local history publications: The Friends group has published a series of local history books including A Priceless Gift: the history of the Launceston Mechanics’ Institute and Public Library 1906 to 1948 by Stefan Petrow.
- Support for children’s services: The Friends group provides funds for projects and equipment for children’s services at Launceston and its catchment libraries as well as funding workshops, visiting speakers and performers.
- Organising and participating: The Friends group organises and supports library-related events.
- Volunteering: Members help with research in local history; home library service deliveries; displays, exhibitions and events; and helping to organise and digitise records.
Membership
Membership is open to any person in the community who wishes to support library services at Launceston Library.
