From Penguin to Geeveston, Tasmanians embraced reading this winter. Libraries Tasmania’s Warm Winter Read challenge attracted 552 participants aged 16 and over, a 35 per cent increase on last year.
Although Lutruwita/Tasmania is smaller than mainland states, participants achieved some of the strongest engagement results in this year’s challenge.
Over June, July and August, participants logged more than 23,500 days of reading and submitted 2,336 book reviews. Prize winners came from communities across Tasmania.
‘The response to Warm Winter Read this year has been outstanding,’ said Simon Jones, Director Library Network.
‘Tasmanians clearly love reading. It’s fantastic to see so many people taking part across the state.
‘Warm Winter Read encourages people to make reading part of everyday life. Whether that’s rediscovering a love of reading, sharing stories with their children, listening to audiobooks or trying new authors and genres.
‘The strong growth in participation shows the important role libraries play in supporting reading, learning and wellbeing in communities across Lutruwita/Tasmania.’
The challenge reached a wide range of readers – young adults, literacy learners, school communities and readers at Risdon Prison.
Feedback showed the challenge successfully motivated people find time to read and discover new books, authors and formats. Many participants said they read more often, building lasting habits and rediscovering the joy of reading.
Library staff across Lutruwita/Tasmania fostered a statewide culture of reading throughout winter with displays, activities and reading recommendations.
Warm Winter Read is coordinated by Public Libraries Victoria and delivered in Lutruwita/Tasmania by Libraries Tasmania.
