It is important to be aware of the rights of copyright owners and how creative material can be used in schools.
Copyright law
Copyright is a law contained in the Copyright Act 1968. Works protected by copyright include:
- Written material
- Musical works
- Films
- TV and radio programs (from free to air TV and streaming services)
- Sound recordings
- Computer programs and games
- Images and artistic works
Copyright does not protect ideas, concepts, styles, techniques or information.
Smartcopying
Smartcopying provides a great range of guides, information sheets, FAQs and resources about copyright issues affecting Australian schools – including COVID-19 copyright issues.
Australian Copyright Council
The Australian Copyright Council is an independent, non-profit organisation that represents the peak bodies for many Australian creators. The website has useful information sheets, many are for educators.
Creative Commons Australia
Creative Commons provides free licences and tools that copyright owners and creators can use to allow others to share, reuse or remix their material. Education fact sheets and videos are available for teachers and students.
APRA AMCOS music licences
The music rights organisation has information about licences so schools can legally perform and reproduce music.
Department for Education, Children and Young People
The Department has copyright licenses so their staff and students can use resources and music for educational purposes. Copyright information on the intranet includes licence information, copyright guides and info sheets, links to websites and copyright warning notices for computers and photocopiers.
