The results are in! Once again, Libraries Tasmania’s annual Top 10s reveal what Tasmanians most loved to read last year. There are some clear trends – and a few surprises.
Tasmanians borrowed more than 3 million items last year from their public library, and Tasmania’s Top 10s serve as a snapshot of our State’s reading tastes.
Featuring the most borrowed items across 19 categories, the full list from 2022 showcases your favourite fiction, non-fiction, romance, crime, magazines, picture books and board books, plus eBooks, eAudiobooks, eMagazines and more.
The Top 10 adult fiction reads by Tasmanian authors for 2022 were:
- The Deep by Kyle Perry
- Bruny by Heather Rose
- The Labyrinth by Amanda Lohrey
- The Bluffs by Kyle Perry
- The Angry Women’s Choir by Meg Bignell
- A Week to Remember by Esther Campion
- Welcome to Nowhere River by Meg Bignell
- Cold Coast by Robyn Mundy
- The Rain Heron by Robbie Arnott
- The Beautiful Mother by Katherine Scholes
The Top 10 non-fiction titles by Tasmanian authors – showing clear trends for memoir, environmental investigation, and the experience of Tasmanian Aboriginal people – were written by Hannah Moloney, Hannah Gadsby, Richard Flanagan, Steve Biddulph, Matthew Evans, Grace Tame, Cassandra Pybus, John Cook, Henry Reynolds, and Rochelle and Walter Dare.
The Top 10 most popular adult fiction titles in 2022 across all genres revealed our ongoing taste for mystery, crime and suspense:
- Better Off Dead by Lee Child
- The Dark Hours by Michael Connelly
- Apples Never Fall by Liane Moriarty
- The Spy’s Wife by Fiona McIntosh
- The Heron’s Cry by Ann Cleeves
- The Murder Rules by Dervla McTiernan
- Over My Dead Body by Jeffrey Archer
- The Match by Harlan Coben
- The Way it is Now by Garry Disher
- The Judge’s List by John Grisham
Notably, Tasmanian author and writer Jennifer Cossins’ The Ultimate Animal Counting Book was the favourite in the junior non-fiction category.
Tasmania’s Top 10s are a great way of finding something new to dive into for Tasmania Reads Week, which is fast approaching from 5–11 March. Tasmania Reads Week is new in 2023. Involving authors, publishers, bookshops, libraries, schools and partners such as the JackJumpers and Metro Tasmania, join in a celebration of books and reading statewide. Find out here.
