Event Description
In 2025 musician and unofficial music historian Julian Teakle donated his collection of Tasmanian music posters and handbills to the State Library and Archives of Tasmania.
The collection celebrates more than 30 years of the underground music scene in Nipaluna/Hobart.
In a library sense, these items are officially called ‘ephemera’.
Ephemera is defined as material that was produced for a specific purpose, rather than something that is meant to last for a long time.
And it is items such as these that inspired Rob O’Connor during his 2025 Creative Fellowship and the work he created for the Remixing the Archives exhibition.
Many people think that for something to be collected by the State Library and Archives it has to be really old.
But, for the collection to remain vital, State Library and Archives staff are always looking for more ways to document our history for future generations of Tasmanians.
Julian Teakle’s collection contains more than 150 items gathered on the streets of Hobart or given to him for safekeeping.
He has donated it in a bid to try and “prevent cultural amnesia”.
Spaces are limited for these tours which will provide a first-hand account of an important time in Tasmania’s music history.
The predominantly handmade posters celebrate the DIY nature of the scene and provide an amazing picture of the time.
You can read more about the donations in an article by Lucie Cutting for ABC Hobart.
Every year the State Library and Archives of Tasmania offers fellowships. Find out more about the fellowships on the Libraries Tasmania website.
