Event Description

An interactive science workshop where participants explore how light behaves and discover the science behind amazing optical effects in everyday life. Delivered by The Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Transformative Meta-Optical Systems (TMOS).

This session is recommended for ages 12-17.

Workshop Highlights

  • Hands-on experiments: Play with lasers, light-bending prisms and DIY spectrometer tools.
  • Real-world connections: Uncover the hidden optics inside security features and everyday devices.
  • Take-home goodies: Every participant receives diffraction glasses to keep exploring optical effects at home.

About TMOS Outreach Team

The ARC Centre of Excellence for Transformative Meta-Optical Systems (TMOS) brings together world-leading researchers from the Australian National University, University of Melbourne, University of Technology Sydney, University of Western Australia, and RMIT. Their outreach team, led by Professor Igor Aharonovich, aims to inspire future scientists through accessible public outreach.

  • Library parking – Corner of Terry Street and Barry Street – Maximum 2-hour parking
  • Glenorchy City Council Carpark off Barry Street - Maximum 2-hour parking

  • 2 permit mobility parking spaces in Glenorchy City Council Carpark - 2-hour parking limits
  • Level access, automatic entrance doors, wide doorways and aisles for wheelchairs
