Geoff Dean was born in Hobart and his first short story was published in the mid-1950s. His stories have appeared in eight collections of his work including Under the Mountain (2007), The Literary Lunch (2004), The Hadlee Stories (1997), Summerbird and Other Stories (1989), Over the Fence: Tasmanian Bush Yarns (1988), and Strangers’ Country and other stories (1977). Dean was published in magazines, anthologies and collections in Australia, the United Kingdom, the USA, Norway and China.

Dean also wrote film, radio, and TV scripts and published many newspaper and journal articles. He compiled a textbook, Cold Dead Monday and Other Australian Stories (1984). His story, The Town that Died, was made into an ABC film in 1988. His short stories have won him the Fellowship of Australian Writers State of Tasmania Short Story Awards, 1964–65; the Fellowship of Australian Writers State of Victoria Short Story Award, 1981; the Victorian Premier’s Literary Award, 1985 and the Northern Territory Literary Award, 1985.
