State Library and Archives of Tasmania Fellowships

The State Library and Archives of Tasmania is pleased to offer a 12-month fellowship program. In 2026, four Fellowships are available.

  • One Research Fellowship valued at $10,000.
  • One Aboriginal Fellowship valued at $10,000.
  • Two Writing Fellowships each valued at $5,000.

The Fellowships are an opportunity for researchers and writers to explore our unique collections and connect the public with Tasmania’s rich stories, identity and history. The collections include government and community records, images, publications, and manuscripts.

How to apply

Read the Guidelines for applicants below, then fill out the online form:

Research Fellowship

The aim of the Research Fellowship is to support historical research, establish new interpretation and knowledge of the collections. It promotes the continued relevance of the State Library and Archives and encourages public awareness and interaction with its collections.

Aboriginal Fellowship

The Aboriginal Fellowship supports a Tasmanian Aboriginal researcher or creative to undertake a project that engages with the State Library and Archives of Tasmania collection.

Writing Fellowship

Two Writing Fellowships are offered in partnership with Island Magazine. The Fellowships provide support for two writers to each produce a piece of creative writing that illuminates, explores, or reflects an aspect of the State Library and Archives of Tasmania collection.

Selection criteria

Applications will be assessed on four criteria:

Costs covered by the Fellowship

  • The Research and Aboriginal Fellowships each award a sum of $10,000.
  • The two Writing Fellowships award a sum of $5,000 each.

Distribution of the Fellowship funds will be negotiated with successful applicants. Funds are expected to be released in instalments over the Fellowship’s 12-month period.

Recipients may use the funds at their discretion to cover any expenses that support their proposed project. However, all costs related to the project’s completion and presentation are the responsibility of the Fellowship recipient. Libraries Tasmania will not provide additional funding.

The Fellowship must be used to fund a new, stand-alone project. It cannot be combined with another fellowship or sponsorship nor used to continue an existing project.

Any financial or tax matters arising from receipt of the Fellowship are the responsibility of the recipient.
