The refurbished Ground Floor at 91 Murray Street is now open
Experience the new entrance to the State Library and Archives Building in Hobart. Find your favourite heritage features preserved and discover new exhibitions and artworks.
The Honourable Joanne Palmer MLC, Minister for Education, officially opened the refurbished Ground Floor of the State Library and Archives of Tasmania Building on 14 October.
The redeveloped public space retains the heritage features of the building including the clock, stairwell and timber detailing.
The space is a central city hub for visitors and includes:
- improved accessibility
- a media wall showcasing Tasmanian stories on a big screen
- a beautiful new artwork, Tunapri/Knowledge by Tasmanian Aboriginal artist Caleb Nichols-Mansell, embedded in the floor
- study spaces
- a new entrance and display area for the Allport Library and Museum of Fine Arts.
Visitors can now:
- enter the building from the main Murray Street entrance
- use the returns chute 24/7 in the Bathurst Street car park or return items at Hobart Library on level 1
- use the library car park.
