Enjoy an exciting line-up of author events at your local library
What’s better than enjoying a fantastic book? Meeting the author who wrote it, of course!
Libraries Tasmania holds regular free events with local and interstate writers. Events include book launches, author talks and guest authors joining some of the regular book chats.
The events are a fun way to get to learn about authors, hear about their books and writing process and get some burning questions answered (no spoilers though!).
Monica Vuu found comfort in her local library
Recently, writer Monica Vuu came to Hobart Library to chat about her debut novel When One of Us Hurts and revealed how libraries and reading inspired her to become a writer.
The Canadian-born writer was living in Dubai when she moved to Tasmania in 2019. When homesickness hit, Monica found solace in her local library and lost herself in reading.
“I made a second home at the library,” Monica explained. “It was a familiar feeling, so comforting. Whenever I couldn’t access a library, I used the Libby app, which has been life-changing.”
Monica soon decided to have a go at writing her own novel and enrolled in a novel writing course. The rest, as they say, is history.
When One of Us Hurts is inspired by the remoteness of rural Tasmania and is set in a fictional beach town on Tasmania’s north coast.
Monica wrote the book in Scottsdale, then edited it at several libraries as she moved around the state, including Hobart, Launceston, Burnie and Kingston. She’s just finished her second novel, set on a tiny fictional island off the West Coast of Tasmania, which she wrote at Hobart and Kingston libraries. So, if Monica looks familiar, it might be because you’ve seen her working at a desk at your local library!
