Living my best life

What does living your best life mean to you?

Nineteen Tasmanian artists with disability explore this universal question in the travelling exhibition Living My Best Life, proudly presented by Libraries Tasmania in partnership with the Disability Commissioner Tasmania.

Living My Best Life is showing at Devonport, Burnie, Queenstown, and Launceston. The exhibition invites communities to explore the personal perspectives of Tasmanians with disability on what it is to live your best life.

Artworks range from quiet and contemplative, to bold and expressive, spanning diverse artistic practices.

Among the artists is Lisa Rime, who presents a collection of self-portraits needle-felted in soft fibres that are anatomically accurate representations of her own body parts. Living with chronic pain and disability, her works serve as a thank you to her body.

‘To me, living my best life means feeling connected,’ Lisa said.

‘I love that this exhibition provides an opportunity for advocacy within community.

‘One third of Tasmanians live with disability and for many of us our conditions are invisible. Sharing visual representations can help to build understanding and compassion, community, and conversations about our diverse experiences and lives. I hope visitors find our artworks to be curious and thought-provoking.’

Disability Commissioner, Dr Catherine Whitington, said ‘[This is] an honest collection of artworks from Tasmanians with disability, centred around a universal theme: living your best life.’

‘Each artwork offers a new and personal perspective. As viewers we are invited to reflect on the shared human experiences of living a life that is meaningful to us, inclusion, and belonging.’
