Historical Archaeological Excavations at the Hope and Anchor (Preliminary Results)
The Hope and Anchor Hotel was first established c.1807 as the Whale Fishery, a public house and one of the first permanent structures in nipaluna/Hobart at the centre of maritime trade and activity. Originally located on the western bank of the Hobart Rivulet above the shores of the Derwent Estuary, the landscape around the pub has changed considerably over the last 200 years, with the city of Hobart developing around it. Three iterations of the public house and hotel existed, reflecting changes to the Hobart waterfront and the needs of the township itself more broadly. Archaeological investigation of this site has just begun but we are already developing an understanding of the people using the public house, hotel and shops, and well as how they interacted with the surrounding landscape.
This presentation provides an overview of preliminary findings from the small part of the site that has been archaeologically excavated to date and outlines the avenues of inquiry we will be taking to better understand the significant stories associated with this place.
The event is part of National Family History Month at the State Library of Tasmania.
