Bring your little Tasmanians and enjoy fun activities and a reading of the new Little Tasmanian board book, Little Tasmanian: Katy’s Garden.
Little Tasmanian: Katy’s Garden tells the story of Katy and four inspirational Tasmanians from around our islands. Join them, and an array of Tasmanian animals, as they go on a journey to create something special in this place.
We’re bringing Katy’s garden to life at Hobart Library, especially for children aged 0-5. Join illustrator Shiloh Longbottom and computer scientist Mars Buttfield-Addison for a morning of art, craft, and exploration.
About Little Tasmanian
An initiative of the ‘It Takes a Tasmanian Village’ Child and Youth Wellbeing Strategy, Little Tasmanian was created in response to what Brand Tasmania heard from Tasmanians. We interviewed over 200 Tasmanians in-depth and heard stories of overcoming hardship, isolation, and a feeling of underestimation. They spoke of the small and the special in a world that tends to overvalue the big and the loud. They also spoke of low literacy rates, and of growing up without confidence and aspiration.
The message they wanted to impart to their fellow Tasmanians was this: someone just like you did it and you can do it too. Whatever ‘it’ is.
During the life of the project, every parent or carer of a child born in Tasmania will receive a Little Tasmanian library bag containing a white cotton ‘Tasmanian’ romper, a library card, a magnet showing basic information about children aged 0-2, and a board book illustrated by Tasmanian illustrator Shiloh Longbottom. The board book will be distributed to libraries and other infant and early childhood initiatives, and the bag, book, and romper are available for purchase online.
Little Tasmanian brings the Tasmanian story into the lives of new Tasmanians in their early years, connecting parents and carers with Tasmanian information about their children aged 0-2, and encouraging pride and confidence in children from the very beginning.
