Author Talk: Real Men Don’t Do Therapy at Hobart Library

2 August at 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

Wole Akosile’s Real Men Don’t Do Therapy is an exploration of identity, following immigrant Femi.

About the book:

Set in Brisbane, Australia, ‘Real Men Don’t Do Therapy’ is a poignant exploration of identity, following the journey of Femi, a Yoruba-born immigrant navigating the complexities of his new homeland. The narrative intertwines themes of social justice, migration, and the intricacies of personal growth.

As Femi grapples with external criticism and internal turmoil, he seeks guidance from the enigmatic psychiatrist, Dr. Segun Agoro. Together, they embark on a journey of self-discovery, unearthing buried memories and confronting past traumas. The novel skillfully weaves together vibrant prose, cultural insights, and psychological fiction, offering readers a compelling exploration of the human psyche.

Themes of identity, friendship, heartbreak, and mental health are intricately woven throughout the narrative, providing readers with a thought-provoking and emotionally resonant reading experience. As someone deeply invested in mental health and storytelling, I believe this book holds significant value in sparking meaningful conversations within communities, particularly around the intricacies of mental wellbeing, identity and acculturation.
