3.4 Sensitive online heritage material
The State Library and Archives of Tasmania collects, preserves and provides access to the state’s cultural heritage in both print and digital formats, and is increasingly expanding digital collections to meet growing demand.
Requests to remove or restrict access to online material are considered in line with the NSLA Statement and procedure on take down, evaluating whether:
- the material is defamatory under Australian law, or is subject to a suppression order
- the material contains sensitive information about a living person, putting them at risk of serious harm
- access is consistent with copyright law
- access is consistent with the donor’s wishes if the item is donated
- taking down the material contradicts freedom of information principles.
We also recognise the significance of Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property (ICIP) rights in our collections and are committed to culturally informed and respectful practices. In line with the NSLA Position Statement on ICIP, we work towards ensuring our libraries and archives are culturally safe spaces for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
