3.2 Book challenges and censorship
Libraries Tasmania’s collection of non-fiction, fiction, and non-book materials for all ages and interests reflect the diversity of the communities we serve. We have a responsibility to ensure that everybody can see themselves represented in our collections.
We do not support title censorship such as removing or restricting titles, even if some individuals find the content subjectively inappropriate or offensive. Rather, we encourage respectful dialogue and critical thinking over censorship. Libraries Tasmania will only remove items from collections if there is a legally based requirement.
Libraries Tasmania selects collection items from approved book vendors and pre-selected lists based on specific criteria in accordance with our Collection Development Policy. Library items are chosen and placed in age-appropriate sections aligning with Australian Classification Board’s decisions and ratings.
