2. Policy Statement
Libraries Tasmania undertakes digital preservation for the purpose of enduring and meaningful long-term access to our collection.
While both our State archives and State Library collections are primarily composed of non-digital materials, the proportion of digital content is increasing rapidly as more items are now created digitally. Libraries Tasmania is responding to this shift by applying digital preservation actions which are an integral part of our wider collection practices.
These actions include structured interventions, supported by international standards and underpinned by consistency, transparency and robust technologies that ensure the ongoing protection of, and access to, the state’s history.
This Policy aligns with preservation and access requirements under the Archives Act 1983 (Tas), Libraries Act 1984 (Tas), and Copyright Act 1968 (Cwlth) incorporating Copyright Amendment (Disability Access and Other Measures) Act 2017 (Cwlth).
This Policy should be read in conjunction with the Collection Digitisation Policy (Libraries Tasmania) which outlines how we determine what will be digitised and when.
