The following guiding principles inform our collection digitisation planning and practices.

PrincipleWhat this means for Libraries Tasmania
Engage with communityWe will engage with and be guided by the Tasmanian Aboriginal community on the appropriateness of digitising and sharing collection materials that relates to them.
Prioritise items for digitisationWe will prioritise collection items for digitisation based on their historical significance, value, conservation requirements, operational needs, and risks associated with lost content.
Be respectful We will respect the rights of content owners and creators as well as any cultural sensitivities.
Comply with copyrightWe will comply with copyright legislation and in most cases allow for free use of digitised materials when Libraries Tasmania owns or manages copyright.
Conservation of itemsWe will ensure staff are appropriately trained to reduce the manual handling of vulnerable materials needing conservation treatment before undergoing digitisation.
Build skills and expertiseWe will invest in contemporary digitisation equipment and develop staff expertise to progress our digitisation program in-house wherever possible.
International standardWe are committed to achieving international digital preservation standards and best practices in digital content accessibility and discoverability.
