2.2 Therapy or companion animals
Therapy or companion animals are not permitted in a library.
A therapy or companion animal provides affection and comfort for a person. This support usually occurs in the home. Therapy or companion animals are usually considered pets. They are not required to meet any legislated standards and have not been trained to assist a person with disability. Therefore, they do not meet the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (Cth) definition of an Assistance Animal.
Staff will respectfully inform anyone with a non-Assistance Animal that only Assistance Animals are allowed and ask them to leave. If they refuse, staff may direct them to leave under the Libraries Regulations 2022 (Tas)
For dogs specifically, site managers are able to make decisions on dogs in and on DECYP property under the Dog Control Act 2000 (Tas), s28.
