Introduction

When you reproduce or refer to material held in the archive and library collections, you must make sure people can find the original item if needed. Here are guidelines for accurately citing our materials.

When publishing or broadcasting material held in our collections, please request permission.

How to cite library items

A citation for a published item should include:

  • Creator /Artist/Author/Composer/ Photographer (where known)
  • Title
  • Place and date of publication

Example – Vaux, James Hardy, Memoirs of James Hardy Vaux, (London: Printed by W. Clowes, 1819).

How to cite items from special collections

If an item is from one of the following special collections, the name of the collection needs to be included in your citation.

Our special collections are:

  • W L Crowther Library, State Library and Archives of Tasmania
  • Allport Library and Museum of Fine Arts, State Library and Archives of Tasmania (abbreviation ALMFA, SLAT)
  • Launceston Manuscript Collection, Tasmanian Archives

Example – Dulcote, Alfred, E-MIGRATION or A Flight of fair game, lithograph, Allport Library and Museum of Fine Arts, State Library and Archives of Tasmania
