What a difference: a decade of 26Ten at Libraries Tasmania

Media Release

19 October 2022

It’s 26Ten Week from 24–28 October, and what a difference a decade makes in people’s lives around Tasmania! For 10 years, 26Ten – Tasmania’s approach to raising adult literacy and numeracy – has successfully united communities, business, government and individuals to work together to improve adult literacy and numeracy in Tasmania.

The 26Ten team in Libraries Tasmania has provided crucial support to the network of 221 member organisations and the 26Ten Coalition, delivering grants to employers and communities, promoting plain English, providing a crucial communications function, and building the range of tools available to help everyone play their part to raise literacy. And of course, our statewide adult literacy service makes a crucial contribution to the collective effort to make a difference to the lives of Tasmanian individuals, families and communities.

“We’re proud to be part of 26Ten. It helps raise awareness of the literacy work we do in libraries and takes our impact to the next level,” said Sue McKerracher, Executive Director of Libraries Tasmania. “Being part of 26Ten raises our profile and attracts volunteer tutors who want to make a difference – we couldn’t run our literacy service without them.”

Thanks to 26Ten, more adults struggling with reading, writing or maths know they can walk into a library and get confidential help or referral support. We offer one-to-one volunteer tutor support or small group activities. More than 4 650 adults have changed their lives by getting support to improve their skills at their local library. To learn more about 26Ten making a difference, view individual 26Ten stories. Libraries are holding events throughout 26Ten Week. Keep an eye on the 26Ten Facebook page and on your local library Facebook page for more information.

You can also enter a prize draw by sharing how 26Ten has made a difference for you. Every entry goes into the draw to win one of 26 Woolworths vouchers valued at $50 each. Find out more here – entries close 5:00 pm on 31 October.
