Media Release
14 March 2023
From 17 to 23 March 2024 all Tasmanians are invited to celebrate reading in fun and meaningful ways. When catching a bus, visiting the farmers market, joining a book group or dropping into a local library, there are plenty of opportunities for readers of all kinds to Try something new and get excited about reading during Tasmania Reads Week.
Program highlights include Read it, Grow it, Pick it, Cook it, Eat it! at Harvest Launceston Farmers’ Community Market, the Hobart Farmgate Market popup library, TasWriters Celebrates Tasmania Reads in Hobart, a living library at Launceston Library and a full program of author talks and book chats at local libraries across Tasmania.
Key events in the program include the launch of the We Love Country StoryWalk at Dru Point Park in Margate on Friday 22 March. In the north west, Burnie Library invites you to join a Dramatised reading of “What Follows…” on Monday 18 March and Devonport Library hosts the palawa Reads Author Panel on Sat 23 March.
It’s no secret that Tasmanians love reading and writing. In October 2023, Hobart was designated a City of Literature by UNESCO, joining an international network of creative cities.
Libraries Tasmania data shows that 19 per cent of Tasmanians are Libraries Tasmania members, borrowing 2 248 191 physical items and 937 838 eResources in 2023.
Reading is an inexpensive pastime. Tasmanians have an increasing appetite for reading in all formats and can do this for free in person or online anywhere, anytime with a Libraries Tasmania membership.
