A new exhibition celebrating Palawa connections to Sea Country will open to the public at State Library and Archives of Tasmania on 4 July 2026.
Here on Sea Country shares the voices, knowledge and lived experiences of Palawa (Tasmanian Aboriginal) people, exploring deep cultural connections to Sea Country through story, art and community collaboration.
The exhibition is based on the book Here on Sea Country, featuring illustrations by Aunty Verna Nichols, and published by Aboriginal Education Services, Department for Education, Children and Young People, in 2024.
The book is jointly authored by Kylie Dickson, Leanne Pelikan (Briggs), Christina Schleich (Mansell), and Nicole Smith.
Exhibition co-curator and author, Kylie Dickson said the exhibition brings the book Here on Sea Country to life in a new way.
“The book shares Palawa voices, knowledge and stories of Sea Country, and this exhibition gives audiences another way to connect with those stories through art, objects and reflection. It invites people to listen, learn and reflect on the ways Sea Country shapes identity, belonging and cultural practice, and on the importance of caring for Country for future generations,” Ms Dickson said.
Visitors are encouraged to experience the exhibition, explore the stories behind the book, and reflect on the enduring connections between Palawa people and Sea Country.
Opening in time for the school holidays, the exhibition offers families a meaningful opportunity to discover and discuss Palawa stories, culture and connections to Sea Country together.
- A media preview will take place on Friday 3 July at 11:30 am, State Library and Archives of Tasmania, Level 2, 91 Murray Street, Nipaluna/Hobart.
