Libraries Tasmania is celebrating National Volunteer Week (18–24 May) by recognising the extraordinary contribution of its volunteers, who help make libraries welcoming places where Tasmanians can learn, connect and access support.
Over the past year, 549 volunteers supported Libraries Tasmania, contributing 31,119 hours of time to communities across the state.
Patrick Gregory, Executive Director Libraries Tasmania, said volunteers are at the heart of what libraries provide.
“Because of our volunteers, Libraries Tasmania is more than a network of buildings – our libraries are friendly, welcoming places where people can learn, connect and feel supported,” Mr Gregory said.
Volunteers support Libraries Tasmania in a wide range of roles, including:
- delivering literacy and numeracy programs – building confidence one learner at a time
- running English conversation sessions – so people can practise, connect and feel welcome
- delivering home library services – keeping people connected to books and information when they can’t get to a branch
- providing IT help, family history support and general assistance – welcoming people in and helping them find what they need.
Mr Gregory thanked volunteers for the time, care and community spirit they bring to libraries.
“Whether someone can give an hour a week or more, every contribution matters and it can make a real difference to a person’s day.”
