Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud – celebrating NAIDOC Week

Media Release
4 July 2024

Join your local library in celebrating the stories, traditions and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples with Libraries Tasmania this year in NAIDOC Week, 7 to 14 July.

This year’s theme – Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud – invites everyone to stand with communities in solidarity.

Tasmania’s public libraries are hosting events around the state, including:

  • Aboriginal Storytime and Rock and Rhyme sessions
  • Book Chats featuring Aboriginal authors and illustrators
  • and film screenings highlighting Aboriginal films and filmmakers.

Highlights include a Rhythm Stick Workshop activity at Smithton Library; a craft session with Story Necklaces and Bracelets at Huonville Library; and two Tasmanian Bush Foods experiences at Launceston Library on Monday 15 July, one for children in Grades 4 to 8 and the other open to all ages – hosted by Tasmanian Aboriginal chef and entrepreneur Kitana Mansell, Project Coordinator for Palawa Kipli.

“Everyone is welcome to join Libraries Tasmania to acknowledge NAIDOC Week and celebrate Aboriginal stories and storytellers. There is something for everyone and many opportunities to celebrate and learn about the oldest living culture on the planet. We look forward to seeing you,” said Sonya Moon, Digital Inclusion and Adult Learning Coordinator at Libraries Tasmania. See the full NAIDOC week events program on Eventbrite or read more on the Libraries Tasmania website.
