Free School Holiday Fun at Libraries Tasmania

Media Release
27 September 2023

With the rising cost of living families are looking for affordable activities for their children during the school holidays.

Families can find plenty of ideas at their local library with Libraries Tasmania offering over 180 activities across the state during the school holidays, 2-13 October.

There is a strong focus on science, art, craft, games and activities suitable for children from birth to 12 years, as well as activities specifically catering to young people in high school.

“Inquisitive young minds will love the Energy on the Move activities with Hydro Tasmania and the Science on the Move travelling exhibition from Questacon, plus we have activities exploring virtual reality and robotics,” said Simon Burrett Libraries Tasmania’s Children and Young People Service Coordinator.

“There is a range of art and craft activities on offer such as screen printing, tie-dye, kokodama, origami, suncatchers. It is wonderful seeing the creativity of children and young people, and their delight when they take home something they have made.”

“There are scavenger hunts for those seeking a challenge, and movies for those who want to chill out.”

“Of course, our library school holiday program also includes a focus on books and stories! We have author talks, junior book chats and a creative writing class. There really is something for everyone. All activities are free of charge,” said Simon Burrett.

A highlight of Libraries Tasmania’s school holiday program are sessions run by members of the Aboriginal Education Services team in the Department of Education, Children and Young People. Erin, Kristie and Nat will share Tasmanian Aboriginal history and culture, including sessions on non-traditional basket weaving and bark canoe making.

Bobby Pedersen, Manager of Aboriginal Education Services reflected on the program, “The blossoming collaboration between Libraries Tasmania and Aboriginal Education Services has seen a beautiful two-way opportunity for all participants to grow in knowledge and skills.

The Aboriginal Education Services team have provided opportunities for learners to grow in their understanding and value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures. They have loved engaging learners in their deepening knowledge and increased respect in this space.” To find out more about the school holiday program and to book into a free activity, visit libraries.tas.gov.au/schoolholidays.
