Connect with your past in National Family History Month

Media Release
29 July 2026

Connect with the past at Libraries Tasmania this August for National Family History Month, delving into the stories, facts and mysteries that shape our communities.

Throughout August, State Library and Archives of Tasmania and public libraries across Tasmania will host free events, including author talks, family history workshops, and archive tours.

The program also features opportunities to learn family history research skills, discover local and social histories, explore treasures from the archives and connect with experts from the National Archives of Australia.

A highlight of this year’s program is a focus on Aboriginal family history. Dedicated sessions at the State Library and Archives of Tasmania will introduce key archival resources, collections and pathways that can assist people with their research.

Director Collections and State Archivist, Ross Latham said family history helps people better understand their place in the world.

“National Family History Month is about connecting with the people and stories that came before us. State Library and Archives of Tasmania is part of Tasmania’s living memory providing a gateway to understanding shared identity and individual stories.”

“This year’s program celebrates the rich and diverse histories of Tasmanian families and communities. Whether you’re just starting your family history journey or building on years of research, there are opportunities to uncover new stories and connections.”

Events will be held at libraries and archive locations across Tasmania, covering topics ranging from First Fleet families, Carr Villa Cemetery and the Ross Bridge to Tasmania’s customs records and Aboriginal family history research.

All events are free and open to everyone, subject to capacity.
