3. Guiding Principals
The following guiding principles inform our collection digitisation planning and practices.
Principle | What this means for Libraries Tasmania |
---|---|
Engage with community | We will engage with and be guided by the Tasmanian Aboriginal community on the appropriateness of digitising and sharing collection materials that relates to them. |
Prioritise items for digitisation | We will prioritise collection items for digitisation based on their historical significance, value, conservation requirements, operational needs, and risks associated with lost content. |
Be respectful | We will respect the rights of content owners and creators as well as any cultural sensitivities. |
Comply with copyright | We will comply with copyright legislation and in most cases allow for free use of digitised materials when Libraries Tasmania owns or manages copyright. |
Conservation of items | We will ensure staff are appropriately trained to reduce the manual handling of vulnerable materials needing conservation treatment before undergoing digitisation. |
Build skills and expertise | We will invest in contemporary digitisation equipment and develop staff expertise to progress our digitisation program in-house wherever possible. |
International standard | We are committed to achieving international digital preservation standards and best practices in digital content accessibility and discoverability. |
