Join us as award-winning non-fiction author Victoria Bruce, who grew up in Huonville, discusses from her new book, Adventures with Emilie, and shares photos and videos from her travels. The book is an account of Victoria’s six-month journey walking the length of New Zealand’s Te Araroa trail when her daughter, Emilie, was only seven years old, after Victoria was diagnosed with complex post-traumatic stress disorder (cPTSD).
While the story takes place in the New Zealand wilderness, the themes strike a chord universally. Victoria reflects upon her formative years growing up in Tasmania, her love of the Australian bush – her playground and hiding place from domestic violence – and her darker years as a teenage heroin addict in Brisbane, before studying journalism at The University of Queensland.
Throughout the book, Victoria intersperses a series of flashbacks with joyful accounts of time spent outdoors with Emilie. This beautifully written and genuinely informative book is an introduction to the embodied experience of post-traumatic stress interwoven with evocative nature writing.
