Brian Rollins is a retired Land Surveyor who has spent the last four decades researching the earliest years of the Van Diemens Land Company’s presence on the N W Coast.

Between 1826 and the mid-1840s the company’s people were responsible for naming at least 405 features between Westbury and Woolnorth, 255 of which endure. The company surveyors named the vast majority, with Hellyer contributing about 314 to the tally, and 202 of these names remain attached to the countryside today, nearly two centuries later.

The origin of these placenames is sometimes elusive, rarely conclusive, and usually inferred. Many have become corrupted, and yet many more have migrated from their original locations. An intimate understanding of the associated history is necessary to disentangle the past from the present.
