Binding:
12 volumes bound in brown leather with gilt decoration and gilt lettering on spine. Volume 1 contains bookseller's label: "Sold by Hookham and Carpenter, Bond Street".
Provenance:
Volume 1 has handwritten ink inscription (partially crossed out) on front pastedown endpaper: "Sixth Form. Matthew Arnold. June, 1839. History Prize". A further inscription in a different hand opposite indicates that in 1846 it was passed on to Joseph Tice Gellibrand, Jr, a friend and fellow-student of Arnold's at Oxford, who travelled to Tasmania in 1851, at the same time as Matthew Arnold's brother Thomas. Gellibrand's inscription also appears on the other volumes.
