History note:
William Jones (1809-1873), along with John Frost and Zephaniah Williams, was tried for his role in the Newport Rising of 4 November 1839, when supporters of the Chartists and their push for universal male suffrage, marched on the town. All three were initially sentenced to death for high treason, but had their sentences commuted to transportation to Australia and were quickly hustled out of the country on the Mandarin, which arrived in Hobart on 30 June 1840. When they were fully pardoned in 1856 Jones remained in Tasmania for the rest of his life, continuing to work as a watchmaker in Launceston.
Summary:
A portrait of the watchmaker William Jones on trial in 1840, one of three separately-issued of each of the three ringleaders of the Chartist movement at their notorious trial in Monmouth in January 1840.
