History note:
A head and shoulders portrait of Richard Lewis, facing front. Richard Lewis was an auctioneer and merchant who arrived in Hobart Town in 1815. He founded a commercial and shipping business later known as R. Lewis & Sons.
Condition:
Condition: Support: tension strength good; surface plane - slight stretcher bar distortion. Paint: concentric craqueleure impact cracks upper left; repaired damage left of sitter's head; minor losses of paint around edges especially bottom left corner. Surface: varnish semi-gloss except glossy around repair; matt streak on sitter's cheek (proper left) - unvarnished area. Frame: rigidity good; cracks top left. Slip: gold painted - minor chips in slip.
