History note:
A head and shoulders portrait of Charles Benjamin Lewis, facing front. Charles Benjamin Lewis was the youngest son of Richard and Isabella Lewis. He married Mary Ellen Allison in March 1853, aged 23, died November 1853, aged 24. Letters of administration were granted in 1854. His father, Richard Lewis, was an auctioneer and merchant who arrived in Hobart Town in 1815. Richard Lewis founded a commercial and shipping business later known as R. Lewis & Sons.
Condition:
Condition Minor scratches, cracks and dents to frame especially top centre right inside edge. Minor scratches, abrasion and stain (centre right) to slip. Early glass with natural imperfections. Mould-like accretions on glass. Abrasion and significant retouching of media. Previous treatment to repair major tears down the right side and diagonally across the bottom right quarter. Also the top left quarter and across the face bottom left corner. All tears retouched with colour. Some staining around the tears and retouching.
