History note:
A head and shoulders portrait of Neil Lewis, facing front. Neil Lewis was the second eldest son of Richard Lewis, an auctioneer and merchant who arrived in Hobart Town in 1815. Richard Lewis founded a commercial and shipping business later known as R. Lewis & Sons. Neil Lewis was a merchant in partnership with his father and brother, and also a farmer. He owned Milford and Lanherne properties in Cambridge. He was also one of the first directors of the Tasmanian Steam Navigation Company. Neil Lewis married Anna Maria Cox in 1856.
Condition:
Condition: Frame has some abrasion, minor scratches and dents and separation of corners. Minor loss to frame edges. Gilt slip has minor staining and scratch top left. Early glass has minor dirt and marks. Stretcher has slipped in frame. Discolouration within stretcher. Dust paper has detached and two pieces are visible from the front. Slight fading. Two tears to centre left and right of sitter. White tape marks top left edge and white colour strip bottom right. Stains and areas of minor fading.
