Binding:
Three volumes folio, bound in contemporary half red morocco with gilt rule over marbled paper boards, the upper boards each with matching red morocco label lettered in gilt: "Mrs. W. Fletcher, 1834" within an ornamental gilt border; spines lettered in gilt, "Music. Vol. I [II or III]". The front hinge of Vol. I binding is split, revealing the original lining within the backing, which is a strip from the classifieds section of the Hobart newspaper 'Colonial Times' for Tuesday 15 October, 1833. The binder is unidentified, but various possibilities have been suggested: perhaps George Henry Peck (1810-1863), who arrived in Hobart in June 1833 and was in business as a 'carver, gilder, ornamental designer and binder' with a shop in Liverpool Street, Hobart, by early 1834; George Rolwegan or George Howard; or the binder who worked for Andrew Bent in 1834, Polish-born London convict Ernest Elsmer. Carla Baker (in her essay "Mysterious broken binding proves a silver lining", in 'The Van Diemen anthology 2023 : the best of the Van Diemen History Prize 2022-2023') discusses the likelihood of the binder being George Peck, James Wood, Andrew Bent or Dr James Ross - noting that "I believe the most likely binder of Hannah Fletcher's folios to be Dr James Ross ..."
