Originally framed in a circa 1905 gilt gesso frame with gold mount by C.H. Saunders whose label was on backing.
Label on original backing inscribed in ink in E.N. Payne's hand: "View of early Hobart, the Penitentary Buildings, (now demolished) at the Cascades, with Mt Wellington in distance. supposed to be Beecham, [Beecham crossed through and 'P.B. Beauchamp' substituted in a different ink and hand] an artist of early Hobart, bought at the sale of the effects of the late Judge Adams in Hobart in 1912 by Dr Charles A. Payne". 2nd inscription below in W.E.L.H Crowther's hand "By purchase Mrs E.N. Payne Aug 19 1957"
Artist was in Hobart in 1860 (Hobart Town Advertiser 29 Nov. 1860 page 3, c 2).
