The State Library and Archives of Tasmania – Launceston is now open. It will service the north of Tasmania by providing access to a wide range of local and Tasmanian documentary heritage.
The dedicated space at Launceston Library was opened on 30 January 2025 by the Minister for Education, with around 50 attendees.
The Hon. Minister for Education, Joanne Palmer MLC, said: “The new space in Launceston provides access to a wealth of local northern Tasmanian historical records and documented history, making it an invaluable resource for researchers, students, and the general public.”
Minister Palmer also spoke about a series of paintings installed in the space from Tasmanian Aboriginal artist Lisa Kennedy. The four paintings are the original illustrations featured in the children’s book Sky Country written by Aunty Patsy Cameron.
Sky Country is an ancient story of creation that describes two Ancestral Beings who came down from the Milky Way to create the Trouwerner (Tasmanian) landscape.
Highlights of the State Library and Archives of Tasmania collection held in Launceston include:
- township maps of early Launceston
- topographical maps of Tasmania
- the Meston Collection (Australiana and anthropology)
- brochures and flyers about local industries, including tourism.
