Libraries Tasmania membership is free. You can join in person, or online.

Libraries are for everyone. You don't have to be anyone in particular to use a library.

Membership gives you access to our physical and digital library collections.

You can:
  • Borrow from our extensive range of books, music, movies, magazines and newspapers
  • Book a computer, print and photocopy (for a small fee)
  • Get assistance with accessing the online world
  • Search our catalogue for books on topics you are interested in
  • Study in a quiet space, with room to also meet fellow learners to work together
  • Share your love of reading and learning with your children with our large range of books, movies, and music aimed at ages 0 - 12
  • Access historical materials in our secure history reading room

We have a range of hard copies and online resources, so you are not limited if you can’t get in to one of our many sites.

You are also able to borrow from one site and return to another if that is more convenient for you.

Are you a Tasmanian Resident?

If you are a resident of Tasmania, you are entitled to full membership; you can join online to get 21 days access to our online collections and resources.

To upgrade to full membership, visit one of our libraries with your proof of identity. This will give you access to our full range of resources, and you can borrow straight away.

See the list of proof of identity documents.

Are you a visitor to Tasmania?

You are welcome to apply in person for a three-month membership while you are in our great state.

You need to apply at your local library.

Your visitor membership entitles you to access all our great services including:
  • Borrow books, magazines, music and movies
  • Book a computer for research, emailing or keeping up to date with current events
  • Print and photocopy (for a small fee)
  • The ability to borrow from one site and return to another, so you can keep reading while you are on the move

The only exception is you won’t be able to access our licensed eResources.

If you have any questions, please ask any of our helpful staff.
