How to cite library items
A citation for a published item should include

Creator /Artist/Author/Composer/ Photographer (where known)

Title

Place and date of publication
How to cite items from special collections
If an item is from one of the following special collections, the name of the collection needs to be included in your citation.
Our special collections are:
- W L Crowther Library, State Library of Tasmania
- Allport Library and Museum of Fine Arts, State Library of Tasmania (abbreviation ALMFA, SLT)
- Launceston Manuscript Collection, Tasmanian Archives
Example - Dulcote, Alfred,
E-MIGRATION or A Flight of fair game, lithograph, Allport Library and Museum of Fine Arts, State Library of Tasmania
How to cite part of a record
Example - Beattie, J. W, Capt. William Langdon, Members of the Parliament of Tasmania [photograph album] no 56, Hobart [19--]
How to cite an unpublished item (non-archival)
Include:

Creator
-
Title
-
Type of non-published item in square parentheses, such as thesis, conference paper, poster, working paper, album (etc.)

Year
Example – Holloway, John Frances. William Legrand a study [thesis], Queensland, 2010
How to cite state archives
When citing archival records, you need to include:
- The name of the institution holding the record
- The item number
Example - Tasmanian Archives: HSD62/1/4
When creating a reference list, bibliography or footnotes you will need to include:

The name of the institution holding the record

The name of the agency or person who created the record
-
The series title
-
The item title and date range
Example - Tasmanian Archives: Devon Public Hospital; Admission Registers, HSD62/1/4 1939-1943

How to cite state archives with additional conditions
You may need to acknowledge the donor of the records. You can find details of what you need to include under How to Use Series on the
Series Details page.
When citing archival records with additional conditions, you need to add an acknowledgement:
Example - Tasmanian Archives: Jack Thwaites Collection; NS3251/1/23
When creating a reference list, bibliography or footnotes for items with additional conditions you need to add an acknowledgement:
Example - Tasmanian Archives: Jack Thwaites Collection; Photograph Central Highlands Cradle Valley Winter Ranger NS3251/1/23, 1955
