Search HelpIn Tasmania the performing arts scene, ballet culture and our visual archival history were shaped by the inimitable figure of Beatrice ‘Beattie’ Jordan (1897–1988). As a dancer, choreographer, teacher and owner of the Beattie Jordan Dance School, she inspired and recorded a series of luscious and creative costumes for her students over the course of her long career.
Join curator Penny Carey-Wells for a fascinating talk about the life of Beattie Jordan, lavishly illustrated with images from Beattie Jordan’s archive which she deposited with the Tasmanian Archives.
About the speaker:
Penny Carey Wells lectured in paper making at the Tasmanian School of Art for 14 years. She was then employed as Conservation Officer and Exhibition Officer at the State Library of Tasmania and Tasmanian Archives. Penny loved her close connection to the collections and they have inspired many art activities, exhibitions and projects.
In 2005 Penny worked on rehousing the Beattie Jordan albums and scrapbooks.
It was way back then that Penny foresaw the possibility of that collection being the catalyst for an exhibition. It is no coincidence that Penny has held a lifelong love of dancing and fabulous costumes.
